Historical tour of three cities in Georgia

The Lord’s Fortress

Uplistsikhe literally, “the lord’s fortress” is an ancient rock-hewn town(more than 3500 years antiquity) in eastern Georgia, some 10 kilometers east of the town of Gori, Shida Kartli.

Built on a high rocky left bank of the Mtkvari River, it contains various structures dating from the Early Iron Age to the Late Middle Ages, and is notable for the unique combination of various styles of rock-cut cultures from Anatolia and Iran, as well as the co-existence of pagan and Christian architecture.

Archaeologists introduce Uplis Tsihka as one of the oldest Georgian cities. It is strategically located at the heart of the ancient Carter Empire and considered as the most important political-religious center of the country. The history and significance of this city are mentioned in medieval writings in Georgia, as well as its origins to the Chartsal’s grandchildren’s applets . The rock-cut structures include dwellings, a large hall, called Tamaris Darbazi, pagan places of sacrifice, and functional buildings, such as a bakery, a prison, cellars, and even an amphitheatre, all connected by footways and tunnels.

The place was founded in the late Bronze Age, around 1000 BC. Between the 6th century BC and the 11st century AD, Uplistsikhe was one of the most important political and religious centers of pre-Christian Kartli – one of the predecessors of the Georgian state.

Gori

The city was founded by one of the largest kings of Georgia , Davit IV.

Joseph Stalin was born in this city and lived there until 1894. Stalin’s home has become a museum, and a large statue of Stalin was built in Gory, which remained until recently.

Gory is known as a city since 1801. The economic significance of this city increased since 1872 after the construction of the Tbilisi – Poti railroads. Before the Great Revolution, there was no industry in the city, and only crafts and commerce were major activities alongside agriculture. The Gori earthquake of 1920 caused many parts of the city to be destroyed. But it was rebuilt in1926 and its population grew rapidly to 10000.

Metsakhta

is the capital of the Kingdom of East Jerusalem , located in Rhine-Kartli . Metsahta is from the old towns of Georgia .

The excavations carried out in and around the city include valuable works from the material examples of the first millennium BC Jesus Christ ( AD ) to the centuries 1-6.
